Giant Fennel (Ferula communis)

Synonyms: Bubon rigidior, Ferula abyssinica, Ferula anatriches (see The Plant List for more synonyms).

 

Ferula communis grows in dry limestone soils in the Mediterranean; 0-500 m. It is a tall perennial herb growing up to up to 3 m in height; the stems are 3-7 cm thick. The small yellow flowers are arranged in umbels; the fruit is an orange-brown achene. This species flowers from April to June.
